Mel Barsky is the Director of Business Development at CABHI. He is responsible for developing and identifying new commercial opportunities that will expand the continued Canadian and international growth of CABHI, as well as leading the business development, marketing and communications functions of the organization. Mel brings to CABHI more than 25 years of leadership experience in venture capital, healthcare IT, sales, marketing, operations, financial services and information technology.
Prior to CABHI, Mel co-founded INTERVENT Canada in 2007. He led the Canadian operations, strategy and sales. INTERVENT has served over 2.5 million patients globally; over 200 corporations; and has been published in more than 100 peer reviewed major medical journals demonstrating the efficacy of its programs and improvement in health outcomes. Recently, Mel completed a strategic asset sale of INTERVENT’s Canadian B2B business and launched a direct to consumer business called “INTERVENT Medical Weight Management” in partnership with Nestlés Health Sciences.
Previously, Mel was a founding partner and Executive Director of Scotiabank Private Equity Investments, where, as a venture capitalist, he invested in and provided governance to private and public companies, primarily in financial services and information technology sectors. Scotia Private Equity invested over $100 million and actively managed these investee companies through to successful exits. Notable investments include Q9 Networks (a web hosting company) where Scotia invested $25 million as part of an $88.5 million financing, later going public and ultimately acquired for $1.1 billion by BCE for a greater than 9x return from IPO.
Before Scotiabank, Mel was Director of Business Development & Sales Strategy for corporate card and travel products at American Express. Mel has also worked as an equity trader on the floor of the Toronto Stock Exchange.
In his spare time, Mel enjoys playing basketball, guitar and travelling with his wife, 5 kids and Australian Labradoodle.
